More About AuTrain Lake & Surrounding Area...

AuTrain Lake is an extremely scenic 830 acre lake with a maximum depth of 30 feet and an average depth of 12 feet. The lake bottom is predominantly sand with scattered deposits of gravel. It is noted for some of the best Walleye, Northern Pike, and Perch fishing in the Upper Peninsula. There are also Smallmouth and Rock Bass. Ice fishing is top notch here at AuTrain for jumbo Perch, Pike, and Walleye. The AuTrain Basin, AuTrain River, and Lake Superior are excellent Trout, Steelhead, Pike, and Perch waters. There are also nearby charter services. AuTrain Lake was a favorite fishery for the local and Marquette residents and gained a reputation as being particularly productive for large Northern Pike and Walleye. It is probably for this reason the DNR has been stocking large numbers of Walleye every other year.

Our lighted dock has individual bays for each boat. Bring your own fishing or ski boat or you can rent a 14 foot Mirro-Craft boat and motor by the day or week. We have a paddleboat, canoes, and kayaks for paddling the lake and river.

Besides being noted for its excellent fishing, the lake is also known for Duck and Goose hunting.

The AuTrain area, surrounded by the Hiawatha National Forest, offers excellent Deer, Grouse, Snowshoe Rabbit, and Bear Hunting. There is plenty of room in the Hiawatha National Forest and surrounding state land to spread out and not be crowded by other hunters. After a day in the woods, gather around the buck pole and share some stories.

The ATV and snowmobile trails are easily accessible right from your door. We average 300+ inches of snow per year. Snowmobile right from your door to over 300 miles of marked and groomed trails within the Hiawatha National Forest and beyond. These trails connect to over 2,500 miles of trails crossing the Upper Peninsula. A free trail map is available. Feel free to check out the web cam or call us for trail information. There is a heated work area if needed and snowmobile rental nearby. There is also ample parking for your vehicle and trailer with a large circular drive. Would you like to leave your snowmobile or ATV trailer and return in a few weeks? Northern Nights can accommodate you.

The Hiawatha National Forest affords a wide variety of hiking, biking, and cross country skiing. Beginners to experts find biking opportunities along Valley Spur Mountain Bike Route located near AuTrain. Valley Spur takes you on 26 miles of marked bike routes. For cross country skiers, the lighted Cross Country Ski trail in Christmas and the many trails at Valley Spur are only minutes away. The Grand Island National Recreation Area offers old woods roads and trails running the perimeter of Grand Island with many miles of hiking and biking. Birders have an opportunity to walk the song bird trail starting at the AuTrain Lake USFS campground. The songbird trail winds through forest and field, along bog and lakeshore, and includes an observation platform on AuTrain Lake\'s Buck Bay. Canoe the AuTrain River, canoe livery available locally. The slow moving, meandering river offers an excellent four to six hour canoe trip for novices and experienced paddlers. Numerous sloughs along the watercourse harbor a variety of wildlife including ducks, songbirds, great blue herons, kingfishers, muskrats and turtles. Enjoy golfing at Pictured Rocks Golf and Country Club or the miniature version at Eagle Falls Adventure Golf. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has great hiking trails, short and long. Pictured Rocks Cruises offers a three-hour boat tour viewing spectacular multi-colored sandstone cliffs with rising 200 foot rock formations. There is a dive shop with rentals of dive equipment and tank refills. Marquette Mountain offers downhill skiing, just 28 miles away. Alger County alone has over a dozen waterfalls. Some are a short walk and others could be combined with a day of hiking. Kewadin Casino in Christmas is just minutes away. And after a day of all that recreation you may not feel like cooking.
